Obituary of Alan Coleman Hardie

Alan Coleman Hardie made his final flight on March 25th, 2018 at home in Thousand Oaks, Ca. With comforting love from family and friends he departed off into the sky and has “Flown West” through the clouds to Heaven. Alan was born June 15th, 1939 in Marysville, CA to John Auchmuty Hardie & Mary Coleman Hardie. After 3 years at Cal Poly University, SLO he was selected into the Navy/NAVCAD and left to pursue his lifelong dream to fly. Awarded his Navy Wings in 1964. He served with VP-48 Squadron (North Island & Sangley Point), VRF-32 (ferry squadron), and Naval Reserves VP-65. Alan was among ‘the last of the Flying Boat Captains’, performing patrol missions during Vietnam. The P5M Marlin flying boat was very dear to his heart. Alan joined TWA in 1968 and began his career as a commercial airline pilot. He flew all over the world until retirement in 1999. Alan worked with a grief team helping families of employees lost on TWA Flight 800, an event which touched him deeply. Alan was an active member of the Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge, serving as Investigations Committee Chairman. Also a proud member of the Quiet Birdman Association. Alan was an Angel on earth. Everyone who met him came away a better person. Known throughout the neighborhood for porching everyone's newspaper, while walking his Scottie dog. Alan was the essence of love and happiness, which he shared with everyone! His wife, Dorathy said, “He was a stranger to no one and enjoyed conversing with all!” Alan will be especially remembered for being a wonderful loving husband, dad, grandfather, great grandfather and tremendous friend. He had a way of making everyone feel special with his gentle kindness, tremendous sense of humor, his heart of gold and love for all creatures, great and small! Alan is reunited in heaven with his parents and brothers David Hardie, Howard Hardie and Bill Greenhalgh. He is survived by his wife, Dorathy Luedecke Hardie, sons Mark Hardie and Keith Hardie (Marla), daughter Denise Willis (Joe); brother Kenneth Hardie (Susan) and sister Nancy Greenhalgh, sisters-in-law Joyce Hardie and Barbara Hardie; grandchildren Katelyn Willis (Philipp Jones), Kelsey Willis, August Hardie, Aaliyah and Kianna Porter; great granddaughter Jessilynn Willis.
