Obituary of Betty Louise Rockafellow (Bumpus)

Betty Louise Rockafellow, 87, was called home on May 12, 2014 after a short illness. Betty was born on February 7, 1927 to James P. and Daisy Bumpus in Missouri Valley, Iowa. She spent her first nine years in Pender, Nebraska where her parents helped build the Assembly of God church in 1935. At the age of 10, the family moved to Yuba County. She graduated from Marysville High School in 1945. Betty was active in sports, played the violin in the school orchestra and a musical quartet and sang in the choir while at Marysville High School. During World War II, she worked for Pacific Bell on weekends and holidays after school. She was hired full time in 1945 retiring in 1982 at the age of 55. She was credited with 39 years of service, she belonged to the 39'ers and The Telephone Pioneers. She is survived by her son, Thomas Johnson (Myra); her daughter, Rita Peach (Raymond deceased); two step daughters, Mary Pryor (Eldon deceased), Brenda Putman (Dale); nine grandchildren and her faithful companion, Libby. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Oscar Rockafellow, two brothers, Allen Bumpus and Ralph Bumpus, two sisters, Lucille Cox and Margie Sellers. Betty was a member of the Crossroads Community Church since 1994 where she volunteered for many activities. Pastor Jim Clark from Crossroads will officiate at the memorial service at Sierra View Memorial Park on Friday, May 16, 2014, at 10:00 am. There will be a reception following the service at the church at 445 B Street, Yuba City.
