I watched Corby play on The Porch at the 1999 Portland Waterfront Blues Festival. I was so inspired by this young man's talent that I signed up to follow him but lost contact until his father found my email on Corby's mailing list and notified me of his project to honor Corby. I was shocked to see that Corby had passed 11 years ago. I really wanted to see him live again. RIP Corby.

Q: What will you never forget about Corby?
A: Of course, I will never forget Corby's amazing guitar playing. He was really taking the styles of Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and other blues greats who influenced him to other levels and interesting directions. He really developed his own unique style, which was always refreshing to hear during the many times I saw him play. I will also never forgot how kind and friendly Corby was, and I will never forget his smile. I will always continue to mourn Corby's passing because his playing and soul always gave (and still gives) me a great feeling. He really touched a lot of peoples' souls hearts and souls with his great and unique guitar playing and his great personality.

I was reading my Jimi Hendrix magazine and first saw his name as winning the under 18 Jimi Hendrix guitar Competition . Then I saw he was playing at the Sacramento Heritage Festival. The acoustics weren't good and I couldn't really hear him good enough and then I went and saw him at the Palms in Davis I need Tore it up. Corby's passion and great guitar licks were and continue to be an inspiration to me...I was heart broken when I heard he decided to take his own life..I'm sure he would have had a great career and would have made his mark in the music business and on the world. And very possably placed his name amongst the great guitar heroes of our time. He loved Jimi Hendrix and Jimi would have loved him....thank you my brother for giving us more then you know...thanks for picking up the electric guitar and speaking your soul to us...Thanks for being an inspiration as to what can be done with the guitar...thank you Corby Yates "Guitar Hero"????

Blown away

I first saw Corby Yates perform in 1999 at the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland, Oregon. I am originally from Louisiana, and love many types of music (blues, jazz, zydeco, etc), but have always loved and appreciated skilled musicians on any instrument. In particular, in 1981 I fell in love with a young guitarist named Stevie Ray Vaughn, after seeing him perform live in Austin. Seing Corby play in 1999 gave me the same type of feelings of disbelief, amazement, and just musical chills. I could not believe a young man could sing with such depth and soul, and could play guitar with such skill and ease.

I remain sad the world lost such a talented musician and artist. May he continue to R.I.P.

moes alley
One magical night I listened to Corby play incredibly of course. I never forgot it and now started to look to see what was up with the great talent I saw 15 or so years ago. And then I found out. I live with and love a suicide survivor. I understand what Corby did and why. I grieve for the talent and loving soul lost. I still grieve Robin Williams too. I know Corby is making great music in heaven. I wish I could have seen you more than once.

Steve Huffman On Corby
Corby and Jim moved into a fairly large house in La Selva Beach and of course being musicians they had to watch expenses. Heating a big house in winter isn't cheap so I introduced them to a Kerosun heater. I used one for years and saved much moola off my electric bill. But their house was big so they came up with this idea to enclose the living room in a plastic sheet wall. That was where they hung out most of the time so it worked well...until...Corby apparently tried to fill the heater without taking it outside (not recommended) and spilled kerosene all over the carpet. I felt bad and wished I never suggested it because no matter how hard they tried they couldn't get those choking fumes out of there. I guess I owe you guys an apology...sorry guys! It was pretty amusing seeing you guys hang out in your plastic bubble room...classic!

Melissa Blasingame a.k.a Daniele Wintersteen On Corby
I was going to read this today but when I couldn't get through it with out crying I knew there was no way I was going to be able to read it but I thought I would share it here instead Where do I start I think the first memory that stands out is in second grade, Corby could draw Roger rabbit like no one else. I can still picture him wearing those big glasses I think they were brown framed glasses. The whole class was amazed at how well he could draw Roger Rabbit :-) and that same year he finally played his guitar for us in class he was so shy and almost embarrassed to play in front of us. When he was done we were all in awe of what he had just done. It was amazing nothing most of us had ever heard before. We started hearing more and more of his absolutely amazing talent. The next and probably most amazing and I think my favorite memory was our 8th grade graduation. I still get chills when I think about Corby playing at our graduation I was so overwhelmed I was crying while he played the National Anthem at our graduation I think the entire Gymnasium was amazed. Then there was the Sierra High Talent shows I remember the first one was awesome all of us from Pine Ridge knew what we were about to hear and the rest of the high school had a huge surprise coming and it didn't take long for the entire school to see how amazing Corby was. The entire gym was roaring with excitement half way through his performance and I couldn't hear myself think when he was done everyone was cheering so loud it was amazing I was so happy for him watching him grow through the years and just get better and better every time I heard him play was wonderful. I saw him at the Mountain Musik Fest in Shaver and everyone was coming to get his autograph and he saw me and talk with me for a long time I kept saying you need to get back to your fans and he said I always make time for my friends from Kindergarten while he continued to sign autographs he kept in conversation with me the whole time. No matter how many fans he had or how famous he got he ALWAYS took special time with his classmates especially those of us that went to school all the way from Kindergarten. I have always enjoyed watching him play and listening to his music I have 4 of his CD's and Love them all. We always knew he was going to go BIG and I was always so proud of him and enjoyed him every time I got to see him perform. The last time I saw him was in Fresno at The Crossroads he played for a while and took a break and spent his whole break talking to me and my husband Mike, then after he was done he came back and continued to visit for a little while I am really going to miss him even though I didn't get to see him very often the times I did see him were wonderful. Corby I will miss you and have so many memories of you. You were a great person, a wonderful friend, and an amazing musician R.I.P. my friend Love Always Melissa Blasingame a.k.a Daniele Wintersteen

Caresse Hiezman On Corby
Ahhh my dear friend Corby. How sad I was to hear you were gone. I have known you and been your friend since I was in kindergarten and you were in first grade at PRS. I remember how hard you rocked the Star Spangled Banner at your 8th grade graduation. I remember all of the talent shows where you brought everyone to their feet. But most of all I remember what a shy, quiet guy you were. Until you picked up your guitar and seemed to pour your very heart and soul out through your fingers for all the world to see and hear. I will always treasure the time I saw you playing with your dad and Ian at the little hole in the wall bar in San Jose on my birthday. You gave me a birthday shout out, and even signed a poster for me. The last time I saw you, you were playing at the same place with Ian and Toby. Man how I will miss you. In particular I remember one rainy day at lunch when a couple of kids were trying to play just off of the Quad area, (they were being mocked by a bunch of the kids) when Corby walked over to them and asked if he could play with them.
Remembering A Talented Friend And Kind Spirit
The music world lost one of the baddest men to strum a guitar. The world lost one of its most gentle souls. I, like many others, lost an old pal. Corby Yates, the prodigy, took his life Sept. 24. He struggled with mental illness in his final years. He was 31. It remains a tough one to digest, because he left us too soon. Tahoe music lovers may be familiar with his work. Corby performed at the Crystal Bay Casino three times between 2005 and 2008, as well as the Village at Squaw and myriad blues venues across the state throughout the late 1990s and 2000s. He was a rare talent and even better human being short on stature, with a selfless, humble disposition and an uncanny mastery of his guitar. I recall hearing about his exploits for the first time. I was a sophomore at Sierra High School, Corby a freshman. My dad's buddy Jimbo had just watched Corby perform at a Shaver Lake bar the night before. Like countless others, he was blown away, ranting and raving about the smoking performance by this 14-year-old, 5-foot-nothing kid. Soon enough, I witnessed his freakish ability firsthand. Jimbo did not exaggerate. Corby absolutely slayed it, laying down Stevie Ray Vaughan covers like nobody's business "Texas Flood, "Tin Pan Alley, "Pride and Joy with the support of a drum machine and his father Jim on the bass. His stubby fingers became blurs of motion, lightening quick and precise, while his face contorted wildly with every note. Word spread quickly. One of our own, mountain-grown classmates was a world-class talent, a no-miss rock star in the making minus the ego. Such was readily apparent at first greeting, and further confirmed with every encounter. Corby was a genuinely good dude. Take, for example, the following comment, posted by guitarist Jim Damiano to a recent Santa Cruz Patch (santacruzpatch.com) article about Corby's death: "I played at the Sonora Blues Festival and was privileged to meet Corby. I came to understand quickly and quietly that he was one of the kindest musicians I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I have never, and will never meet another guitarist of his magnitude that was totally without ego. I will miss you Corby. I will never forget your kind smile and gentle spirit. R.I.P. Well stated. At 17, Corby gained national recognition when he won the 18-and-under division of the Jimi Hendrix Electric Guitar Competition in Seattle, a feat that earned him a pearly white, custom guitar and an opportunity to jam with the remaining members of Band of Gypsys. Yet he remained humble. After high school, Corby expanded his fan base by playing numerous gigs in the Fresno area and beyond, impressing folks with a broad range of blues covers, from his old Stevie Ray Vaughan staples to Hendrix classics the likes of "Red House and "Voodoo Child, and even a unique rendition of "Dear Mr. Fantasy by Traffic. Before long, he strayed from the covers that kick-started his career and began playing his own music almost exclusively. Corby soon moved to Santa Cruz and released his first CD, self titled, in 2001 (he also recorded a cassette tape in 1996). He later released "Back from Yesterday, in 2003, and "Fungus Blues, in 2006. The ethereal "Inside Oblivion was released in 2012. Well past the days of a drum machine, the Corby Yates Band became an even hotter act once landing drummer Andy Doerschuk, a hard-hitting, talented musician and the editor of Drum! Magazine. Corby and his power trio performed with big-name blues artists such as John Lee Hooker, Johnny Winter, Robin Trower and Tommy Castro, among others. The Corby Yates Band was on the map. Another comment from the Santa Cruz Patch article, one about Corby's sheer playing ability, was beautifully expressed and should be shared. It was posted by David Arthur West. "At JJ'S BLUES in San Jose, I mixed sound and recorded Corby, Jim, Andy for a majority of their shows there. Corby was astonishing to watch and listen to. He created a singular giant organism with every person and all the instrumentation fused in tune with a frequency of indescribable effect to the 3rd or 4th power like an interstellar Jet Ski that always ended in a smooth landing. "Watching his stout fingers frailing the strings at times would not synch with the resulting webs of layering sounds and rhythms swirling around the room. There was more sound than the sum total of all his fingers could physically produce by commonly accepted standards. There marks the line between skilled' and genius.'... Well stated. One of my fondest memories of those days was when my dad and I spent a weekend visiting Corby and Jim at their Santa Cruz home. We hung on the beach, toured downtown, blasted tunes, tripped around the Mystery Spot, talked music and life, and laughed. Times were good. Corby was still in his touring prime when I moved to Tahoe in 2005. Shortly after the move, I was excited to learn that he was coming to the North Shore to perform. I rallied a group of workmates for the occasion, and even wrote a preview article for Lake Tahoe Action. He returned on a couple of occasions to play in Tahoe, most recently in 2008. I brought another crew of friends to that show Bunker, Renee and Andy, Matt and Eva, and my old neighbor, Doug. By that time Corby's band had transformed. Instead of his father on the bass and Doerschuk on the drums (he played with other drummers in his career as well), good high school buddies and musicians Ian Blesse and Toby Cordova filled out the trio. That's when I first noticed something wasn't quite right about Corby. He was always on the shy side, but never to this degree. He seemed withdrawn, uneasy. We hung out for a bit afterward, Ian, Toby and my crew and Corby. Only, it wasn't the same old Corby. His website, once commonly updated with a listing of upcoming shows and other activity, became less and less active. He and his father, who had relocated to Humboldt County, had moved again, and to an even less populated area near Brownsville. I saw Corby one final time, the following summer when my dad helped organize a dual retirement party for a couple of family friends, and hired Corby to play. I remember Corby expressing how excited he was to perform a private gig full of friends from his home. But still, there was something different about him, disturbingly so. He wasn't the same happy-go-lucky Corby, no matter how much I tried to pry it out of him. Little did I know, Corby was struggling with his mental health schizophrenia. And that was it. I never saw him again. There's a clich saying that states, "The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long. That was Corby. Ryan said you have to see him play, he's amazing . I went there skeptical, and left Blown Away!, I saw Corby and his Dad play 13 more shows in the next several years after that. The place was packed, every chair taken and folks standing in the room too. Corby took his place on a chair, guitar in hand, and proceeded to rock the place with his special brand of blues. Mid concert the power went off, no lights, no amp. Did that stop Corby? Not at all. Flashlights came out, and Corby continued to play and sing the rest of the evening. It was a magical night. Like seems to happen to so many young, talented musicians, Corby is gone way before his time. RIP Corby.

Corby Yates " The Mountain Boy "
A Celebration of Life for Corby Yates will be held on November 3rd at Sierra High School gymnasium, 33326 Lodge Road, Tollhouse, CA at 1:00 pm. All of his friends, family and fans are invited to drop by and listen to or share stories about Corby that he can no longer tell. A memory box will be available for those who prefer to share privately. Please come dressed casually, wear a Corby Yates Band t-shirt if you have one. We'll totally accept you as you are - just like Corby would have. Corby was a gentle, unique, kind, and loving being. A true mountain boy, he was born on May 1, 1981, in South Lake Tahoe, California. In 1987, Corby and his family moved to the Pine Ridge/Shaver Lake area, where he attended Pine Ridge School. Soon after moving into the area, Corby discovered his awesome gift and what would become his lifelong passion as well as his profession - playing wonderful music on his guitar. His first professional gig was at age 14. At 17, he won the national Jimi Hendrix electric guitar competition in Seattle. Soon after graduating from Sierra High in 1999, Corby moved near the ocean by Santa Cruz, to continue following his musical dream and be closer to many of the music venues he played at. Over the years he grew a very strong following, especially in Northern California. In early 2003, he signed an ill-timed record deal in Paris, France which was ultimately sabotaged by events surrounding the Iraq war. He went on to release five albums during his lifetime. Corby moved deep into the emerald triangle area of Northern California near Burnt Ranch for about a year in 2007. He spent his remaining time on earth living in the mountains near Brownsville, CA with his dad and dog. Corby truly lived life on his own terms and values. Sadly, after spending many years struggling with mental illness, mainly schizophrenia, Corby chose to end his life. He wouldn't want his obituary to focus on that final act or on the courageous battles he faced and fought daily. Corby would want it to be known that he died as a result of being unflinchingly loyal and true to his beloved music and for being, sometimes stubbornly, unwilling to follow ANY kind of doctors' (or anyone else's) orders or advice, if he felt it might affect his muse or ability to play. He was a special human being and a rare, musician's musician whose incredible chops significantlyraised the bar for practically any guitar player who ever heard him play. Corby is survived by his mother, Gail Hart, his father, Jim Yates, and his beloved dog, Blaze 'Lucille'. In lieu of flowers, etc., please send any donations in remembrance of Corby to either Shalom Free Clinic, 1190 E First Avenue, Chico, CA 95926, or donate online at http://www.shalomfreeclinic.org/Donate.htm or NAMI Fresno, 7545 N. Del Mar #105, Fresno, CA 93711.

Don Heflin On Corby
Everyone can speculate what you want. None of it matters. Myself, I want to think of the special talent that was bestowed on everyone that ever heard Corby perform. He was one with his guitar. Once confirmed I could only think of another great guitarist who is now by his side. Bimbo Walker and Corby united once again. Condolences to his family and friends from the entire Central Valley Blues Society

Hobie On Corby
Sorrow fills my heart for his family and friends. I first saw Corby play in a bar in San Luis Obispo when he was about 16. He amazed us with his proficiency on the guitar. I remember telling my friend that it was like Jimi Hendrix had stepped inside the body of this young boy. We made a point of catching every Central Coast show he did until we moved away in the early 2000s. This is indeed a sad day.

Art Silva On Corby
I remember being a freshman in HS and seeing Corby playing Weezer for our school talent show as he wore my friends red sweater. One of the coolest school memory of mine. We still talk about it from time to time. I would love to get all the fellow Sierra High School mates that are in bands and do a memorial show. There's quite a few of us who all went to school with him that can jam some tunes for him. RIP Corby. The music will never be forgotten

David Paul Davenport On Corby
It goes without saying that Corby was a gifted guitarist, probably the best of his generation. Sadly, he also had to battle mental illness, the most misunderstood form of illness in this country. Unlike a physical illness a person suffering from mental illness can't just take a pill because most meds adversely affect the creative energy associated with the gift. The "dynamic tension between the need to try to control the illness stiffles the creativity. Like Vincent Van Gogh, Corby fought a good fight, and we have his music to remember his greatness.

Scott Amberg On Corby
I love the lights out auditorium story, it sounds so CorbyI'd like to share one: JJ's San Jose, I was filming Corby playing "the cure . Someone at the bar had passed out and fell off the stool under the bar (later to be hauled away in an ambulance). The guy at the sound board asked the band to stop playing, Jim pulled out on Bass, slowly Andy stopped on the kit and Corby was still playing, slowly he pulled out of what appeared to be a deep sleep. He looked like he had woken up in a hotel room, wondering where he was. When Corby played, he left the building and his vessel stood there and shredded the guitar. I've seen many greats and every time I saw Corby I noted, "he's the best I've ever seen . Now Corby has truly left his vessel, but his soul lives on in all our hearts. R.I.P. Corby!!!

Julio Sanclemente On Corby
My sincere condolences to the Yates family. I heard of Corby's passing this past Monday and have been deeply saddened. I first saw Corby and Jim perform at Moe's Alley in March 1998 in Santa Cruz and was awestruck by his talent and ability. Following that first show I took many friends to his shows and always enjoyed seeing their disbelief and amazement when they saw him perform. Corby's technical abilities on the guitar were exceptional, but to me it was the intensity, tone and emotion that he played with that was truley special and off the charts. I had the opportunity to talk with him several times during his breaks and after his shows and was immediately struck by his humbleness, and shy demeanor. His off the stage persona was such a contrast from his prowess and presence when he was perfoming. Corby did not say much during his shows, other than an occasional "thank you", which he would stretch out when he said it..."Thhaaannnk you" following a song. So with that I want to again send my thoughts and prayers to the family and to Corby a heart felt....Thhaaannnk you.

Robert Alan Braun On Corby
My god I just found out. Saw Corby back in the day at least over 50 times just here in Sacramento. I have a hole in my heart hearing this. I can hear his voice in the jukebox in my head. I will never lose that. Indisputably the greatest young blues guitarists of his age. You will never die in my heart Corby. Rest easy. "And my dad Jim on the bass!"

Steve Huffman On Corby
Since I was asked to share my Corby memories I'll start with the first one. My son Jake had told me 'you have to hear this Corby Yates play guitar'. So I went to Streetlight and looked for a CD. Nothing. About 2 weeks later I see he is playing @ JJ's in San Jose. I call my good buddy Larry Lee and we go down to see this 'guy'. When we get there we notice an old beat up Ford van out front with guys unloading equipment including this kid that reminded me of a skate punk. We go inside and set up near stage on the right (JJ's is tiny). This kid is setting up pedals for the guitarist and he turns to the dude on bass and cries 'dad...my wah wah is broke'. This was my first clue that this 'kid' is the 'Blues' guitar god Jake was telling me about. 'What could this kid know about the blues?' was my initial thought. Larry and I had our doubts. They found a wah to borrow and the show starts and we watched in amazement as this kid seemed to 'channel' a blues god from the other world. Our jaws were agape! It was astounding. During the break Corby and the bass player were hanging out in the van so we approached them and started a conversation. Turns out the bass player is Corby's dad (Jim) and Corby has just turned 17. They both are as nice, friendly and humble as you could hope for. 2 weeks later I am working @ Aptos Shell doing a Smog Inspection when I notice this familiar looking van at the pumps. There are Corby and Jim getting gas. We talk and exchanged numbers (they needed a mechanic). I would work on that clunker and eventually buy it from them so they could get another more reliable van. We all became friends. Later they would record 'Fungus Blues' at my home. I miss Corby and Jim as 'things change'. But I hold my fond memories and will gladly share more if anyone cares to hear them. Peace and love. Steve.
