Obituary of Sargent Alfred Shira

1919-2012 Passed away on 9-10-2012 at the age of 93, a long time resident of Marysville, CA. Born Jan. 12, 1919 in Lineville, Iowa to Olen R. Shira and Belle M. Webster Shira. The 2nd oldest of 7 children. Sarge moved with his parents to Fruitland, ID from Iowa when he was 3 years old. The family then homesteaded at Harper, OR July of 1927. Sarge spent his growing up years helping on the farm herding turkeys and milking cows. He graduated from Harper High School in 1937. Sarge married Dorothy Dietrick in Payette, ID July 7, 1941 and had two sons, Michael Ray and Anthony Carl. After Dorothy passed away in 1994 he married Betty Prothero April 7, 2001. Sarge was a caring man with a great personality, a great smile and laugh. He was loved by all who knew him. Sarge enjoyed deer hunting when he was younger and fishing the rivers for the big fish after his retirement. His occupation was construction. He was a welder, a mechanic and a trouble shooter in CA, ID, NV, UT, and LA, retiring as an operating engineer in Marysville, CA. His most memorable job was working on the huge dredge in LA that cleans the Mississippi River. Sarge is survived by his son, Michael (Claudia); sister, Phyllis E. Mulvany; 4 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents and siblings; Margaret E. Newman, Wanda R. Jones, Clayton W. Shira, Teresa C. Falck and Thomas T. Shira; wives; Dorothy and Betty and son Anthony Carl. Funeral services will be Monday, Sept. 24, 2012 at Sierra View Mortuary, 4900 Olive Ave., Olivehurst, CA. Viewing 10 a.m. - 12 noon, funeral service at 12 noon.
