Obituary of Paul Lee Phares

Age 88 of Marysville, died peacefully at the Emerald Oaks Assisted Living Center in Yuba City, California. Paul, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, had lived in the Yuba/Sutter area for 49 years. He retired from the U.S. Post office after 22 years, having worked for both the Beale and Yuba City Post Offices. He enjoyed walking, camping and attending horse shoeing competitions, and attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Yuba City, California. A 20 year veteran of the U.S. Navy, he retired as a Radioman Chief Petty Officer. He fought in WWII and Korea, having served in the American Theater, the Asiatic Pacific, the Philippine Liberation, the European, African and Mid East occupations, as well as the United Nations Service. Paul was also a light weight Golden Glove champion boxer in his earlier years. Paul is survived by his wife of 37 years, Betty Phares of Yuba City, California; by his son, Alan Shafer of Virginia; and by his 2 daughters, Cheri Melton of Virginia City, Nevada and Terri Thompson of Marysville, California; and by a twin sister, Pauline Reindel of Indiana. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren (with 3 more on their way.) Paul was preceded in death by his 2 sons, Paul Lee Phares, Jr. (1980) and Donny Phares (2003) and his sister, Gert Meyer (2011). Graveside services will be on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Sierra View Memorial Park in Olivehurst, California. Pastor Rick Rockwood of the North Sutter Hospice will be officiating. Jon Fullerton is the funeral director in charge of arrangements.
