Obituary of Samuel Grover Shannon

Sam passed away Tuesday February 23rd, 2021 at home with his family sixteen days after celebrating his 100th birthday. A life-long resident of Yuba City, he was born on February 7th, 1921 in Marysville to Grover C. Shannon and Dolly Ashford Shannon. He graduated from Central-Gaither School, Yuba City High School, College of Agriculture at Davis and Cal-Berkeley and the California National Guard Reserve rising to the rank of Captain. He was a farmer from over 70 years, growing prunes, peaches, apples, wheat, barley, milo and rice. He was active in Scouting and was awarded the Silver Beaver, the Republican Party, Associated Farmers(president) and Central Valley Rice Growers (founding member and secretary for over 50 years.) He was a charter member of Peach Tree Country Club. He loved hunting and fishing, especially, duck hunting. His biggest disappointment was that the limit of ducks dropped from 50 to 25 the first year he had his hunting license. As long as one of his children was in school, he was on the Board of Trustees for Central-Gaither, Yuba City High School, Yuba City Union High School and Yuba College. He was married to Betty in 1944 till her passing in 1992. He is survived by his daughters Kathleen Shannon of Yuba City, Charleen (Glenn)Orthel of Meridian, Idaho, and Michael (Donna) Shannon of Yuba City, three grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. There will be no services. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favorite charity would be greatly appreciated.
