Obituary of Jane Scarlett Morris Washburn
Please share a memory of Jane to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Jane Morris Washburn passed away on December 22, 2016, at her home in Yuba City at the age of 102. Jane was born in Woodland on March 3, 1914, to C. Oakes and Hazel A. Scarlett, and she was raised in Yolo County, first on a farm and later in Woodland. Upon graduation from high school, she attended San Jose State College where she graduated with distinction and received her teaching credential. Her teaching career began in a two room schoolhouse in Zamora, Yolo County, where she taught the primary grades for two years. In 1938, she married John W. Morris, and the couple moved first to Sacramento and then to Marysville, where they settled and had two sons, William Oakes "Bill" and John Thomas "Tom" Morris. After getting her sons started in school, she took a teaching position at Kynoch School in Marysville teaching first grade, a position she held and thoroughly enjoyed for 27 years. Her feeling was that first grade was so very important to children, as that was where she could give them a start in reading and other subjects which would have an impact on their lives later. After the death of her husband, John, in January of 1988, she married Ralph R. Washburn of Yuba City in 1989. She was predeceased by both of her husbands and her son, John. Jane is survived by her son, William (Susan), of Sacramento, sister, Phyllis McDonald, of Sacramento, niece, Joan McDonald, nephews, Kenneth (Mary) Scarlett, Robert Scarlett, Scott (Karen) McDonald, and Thomas (Elaine) Scarlett, and Ralph's sons, Ralph "Riff" Washburn (Virginia), of Yuba City and Byron Washburn (Nancy) of Monterey, their children and grandchildren, and by some very special friends. Memorial contributions may be sent to a charity of the donor's choice.
